La Jetée is the classic French sci-fi film which inspired Twelve Monkeys. While Chris Marker creates some of the most hauntingly beautiful imagery in cinema, what animates the film's frozen pictures is its sparse and unsettling soundscape. "There is no group more mythical than Faust." Thus wrote English musician and eccentric Julian Cope. Which says it all really. Neither the habitus nor the music of this Hamburg group is easy to grasp. While some laud Faust as the best thing that ever happened to rock 'n' roll, others dismiss them as shameless dilettantes. Their collage of Dadaism, avant-garde rock and free improvisation has radically divided opinion for decades. When their first LP was unleashed on the world in 1971, Faust were very much the prophet in his own land, as the saying goes: few were interested in listening to their music in Germany. Not so across the Channel – where the band's career really took off and British critics first applied the semi-derogatory term "krautrock" to try to get their collective heads around Faust's revolutionary sound. This rare San Francisco performance – featuring original members Werner "Zappi" Diermaier and Jean-Hervé Péron – is a can't miss event.

Ellen Fullman began developing her installation The Long String Instrument in 1981, in search of tonalities that could not be achieved with traditional instruments. For the month of January 2016, the composer will be artist-in-residence at The Lab where she has installed an expanded version of her instrument – over one hundred strings, spanning 53 feet in length. Last year Superior Viaduct reissued The Long String Instrument album, the first document of Fullman's acoustic explorations.

Phill Niblock is a New York-based minimalist composer, multi-media musician, and director of Experimental Intermedia Foundation. Since the mid-1960's he has performed at venues around the world from the Museum of Modern Art to Akademie der Kunste, Berlin. His densely layered drones have inspired a younger generation including Glenn Branca and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo. Niblock says, "What I am doing with my music is to produce something without rhythm or melody, by using many microtones that cause movements very, very slowly." His landmark debut album, Nothin To Look At Just A Record, was reissued by Superior Viaduct in 2013.
For this special performance at The Lab, Niblock will perform recent compositions and screen footage from his breathtaking "Movement of People Working" series. Co-sponsored by Stranded and The Lab.

As promised, 2016 is getting off to a crazy start with classic debuts from Tony Conrad, William Burroughs and John Bender.
In the 1960s, Tony Conrad was a member of legendary NYC group the Theater of Eternal Music, alongside John Cale, La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela and Angus MacLise. His debut album, Outside The Dream Syndicate, came out in 1973 and features semimal German avant-rock band Faust. No other record captures – so completely and instantly – the intersection of avant-garde and rock forms. This first-time vinyl reissue and long out-of-print CD release include liner notes by Jim O'Rourke and Branden W. Joseph. First 500 copies on clear vinyl with special poster. Mail-order exclusive. William Burroughs has had pervasive influence on counterculture in the past 50 years – from the Beats to punk rock and even hip hop. Originally released in 1965, Call Me Burroughs marks the author's recorded debut and features readings from his best-known works. An eerie, deadpan drawl guides the listener through sci-fi innerscapes, narcotic nightmares, reports from the edge of the apocalypse. John Bender recorded voraciously between 1978 and 1980 at his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. I Don't Remember Now / I Don't Want To Talk About It, his first album from 1980, is the holy grail of minimal lo-fi electronics. Layers of fractured melodies, distorted synthesizers, hollowed-out rhythms and claustrophobic vocals reflect a distinct punk-meets-experimentalist sensibility. Harry Pussy emerged out of the Florida swamps in 1993. Originally released on Siltbreeze, their self-titled debut album is an absurd and devastating statement. Ilitch is the moniker of Parisian multi-instrumentalist and NWW-list inductee Thierry Muller. Milk From Cheltenham released their sole album on famed UK DIY imprint It's War Boys in 1983. This first-time vinyl reissue is recommended for fans of Swell Maps, The Faust Tapes, and LAFMS.
Departmentstore Santas' only release is an elusive '80s cult classic. Since the mid-1960s, Jon Gibson has played a key role in the development of American avant-garde music. His expertise on woodwind instruments made Gibson a go-to collaborator in Steve Reich's, Philip Glass', and La Monte Young's ensembles, but less known are his remarkable contributions as a composer and visual artist. In support of the recent reissue of his 1973 debut album Visitations, Gibson performs the title piece along with percussionist William Winant.

During one of WIRE's extended hiatuses, B.C. GILBERT / G. LEWIS joined forces for a series of experimental projects. Originally released on 4AD in 1980, their album 3R4 takes the "studio as instrument" concept to cinematic heights. They return to more song-based territory on the single Ends With The Sea. These first-time reissues provide a vital glimpse into the creative forces that even a band as daring and inventive as WIRE could not contain.
PINK SECTION and INFLATABLE BOY CLAMS emerged from the vibrant San Francisco art punk scene of the late ’70s and early ’80s. While PINK SECTION produced an unusual brand of off-kilter post-punk (collected on this first-time retrospective LP), INFLATABLE BOY CLAMS recorded one of the greatest all-female art punk records ever made, a wrongfully obscure five-song double 7-inch EP reissued here for the first time.

It's only Halloween, but we're already excited about next year. Our first batch of 2015 releases comes out in February and they have a nice mirror-image of LPs vs. singles / black-and-white vs. color.
During one of WIRE's extended hiatuses, B.C. GILBERT / G. LEWIS joined forces for a series of experimental projects. Originally released on 4AD in 1980, their album 3R4 takes the "studio as instrument" concept to cinematic heights. They return to more song-based territory on the single Ends With The Sea. Named after San Francisco Chronicle's pink-hued arts and entertainment guide, PINK SECTION came out of SF's rich and fleetingly art punk scene, producing an unusual brand of off-kilter post-punk against a backdrop of Dadaist aesthetics. Announcing THE FLESH EATERS Mini-Tour October 27 2014
THE FLESH EATERS just announced a mini-tour to celebrate the reissue of their era-defining statement A Minute To Pray A Second To Die on vinyl and CD.
The shows will feature the A Minute To Pray line-up with Chris D. on vocals, John Doe on bass, Dave Alvin on guitar, Bill Bateman on drums, DJ Bonebrake on marimbas and drums, and Steve Berlin on sax. This line-up played only a handful of shows, all in Los Angeles, in the spring and summer of 1981. They reunited in 2006 for All Tomorrow's Parties and played three shows in California. Nine years later, in January 2015, they have once again gotten back together to perform four shows in California.

PHILIP JOHNSON, a lost figure in the dark waters of early industrial music, self-released over 25 tapes starting in the late '70s. As a part of the "cassette culture" in the UK, he produced ethereal soundscapes, damaged electronics and undanceable drum patterns, along with homemade j-cards.
For his first and only LP, 1982's Youth In Mourning, JOHNSON further refined his approach with mesmerizing audio collages and Mark-E-Smith-ian vocals to make one of the most unique documents of the era.
This first-time reissue comes from the original master tapes. Recommended for fans of CABARET VOLTAIRE, John Bender and THE SHADOW RING.

Cleveland's electric eels (all lower case in homage to poet e.e. cummings) is America's quintessential proto-punk band.
